Sulfide Mining Regulation in the Great Lakes Region

A new report by the National Wildlife Federation and Ecojustice Canada examines whether state and provincial laws are up to the task of overseeing sulfide mining. Sulfide mining is new to the region and has proven to be devastating to natural resources in parts of the western United States and Canada.

GLATOS: Great Lakes Acoustic Telemetry Observation System

GLATOSWeb compiles acoustic telemetry project information and helps users learn more about ongoing acoustic telemetry projects in the Great Lakes. Scientists have been implanting Great Lakes fish with transmitters and, like the GPS on a car, have been tracking fish movement through a network of receivers placed on the bottom of the lakes.

Habitat Restoration Partnership webinars

To encourage a dialogue among entities engaged in habitat restoration at Great Lakes Areas of Concern (AOCs), the Great Lakes Commission will host two webinars to review the restoration projects recently completed at the Muskegon Lake, Mich., AOC and St. Louis River (Hog Island), Wis., AOC funded through a Great Lakes Restoration Partnership from NOAA.

Super moon over the Great Lakes

Last Saturday, the moon appeared 14 percent larger and 30 percent brighter than other full moons this year, and photographers around the Great Lakes captured the event. This "super moon" phenomenon is due to its orbit bringing it closest to Earth at about the same time it appeared its fullest.

Michigan fracking: Revolution or regulation?

Michigan lawmakers recently reported on the increased development of natural gas from shale. Supporters say the practice creates jobs and improves the economy. Critics say that if not properly regulated it threatens groundwater, the source of drinking water for half of the state’s population.

2012 Summer Discovery Cruises

For the eleventh summer, Michigan Sea Grant Extension will provide the opportunity for people to learn about the Great Lakes by being on the Great Lakes. Summer Discovery Cruises depart from Lake Erie Metropark, with cruises on the lower Detroit River and Lake Erie, and Lake St. Clair Metropark, cruising Lake St. Clair.

IAGLR 2012

The 55th Annual Conference of the International Association for Great Lakes Research (IAGLR) is being held in Cornwall, Ont., next week (May 13-17). The theme is From Great Lakes Flow Mighty Rivers. Conference materials are now available on the website, and registration will be available on-site.

Great Lakes Coastal Flood Study

The Great Lakes Coastal Flood Study website is the official public website for FEMA's comprehensive storm and wind study of the Great Lakes basin. The study was conducted for the purpose of updating coastal flood hazard information and Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRM) for Great Lakes coastal communities.

Aquatic Sciences Chronicle

A new issue of the Aquatic Sciences Chronicle is now available online. The Chronicle delivers the latest news from the Aquatic Sciences Center, the administrative home of the Sea Grant and Water Resources institutes at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

New USACE report on valuation of commercial fisheries

This week, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) released the "Commercial Fisheries Baseline Economic Assessment - U.S. Waters of the Great Lakes, Upper Mississippi River, and Ohio River Basins" (Commercial Fisheries Report), an Interim Product of the Great Lakes and Mississippi River Interbasin Study (GLMRIS). The report is available on the GLMRIS website.

Webinars: GLRI 2012 RFP

EPA is hosting two webinars regarding applications for grants to be awarded as part of the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI). The webinars will take place on Thu. May 3 and Mon. May 14, and will help explain the Request for Proposals (RFP) and answer questions. Draft agendas for the webinars can be found online, and advance registration is available.

GLIN's May Site of the Month

GLIN's May Site of the Month is www.lsmma.com, the Lake Superior Marine Museum Association. The LSMMA seeks to preserve the maritime heritage of Lake Superior and the Port of Duluth-Superior; cooperate with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to preserve and exhibit maritime artifacts; and fund development of educational and promotional items pertaining to Lake Superior, the Great Lakes, and St. Lawrence Seaway System.
