Great Lakes group asks Toledo for funds The Toledo Blade (2/13) The city of Toledo is being asked to commit $850,000 toward the creation of a National Great Lakes Maritime Museum on the banks of the Maumee River, although officials are confident that money won’t actually be used. Winter activities in Michigan's Upper Peninsula as plentiful as the snow Green Bay Press-Gazette (2/12) The U.P. is renowned for its vast woodlands, rivers large and small, and proximity to three of the Great Lakes. It's hard to think of vacationing here without enjoying the outdoors, where the snow, cold and winter activities stick around for at least another month. Maritime museum construction to begin with council approval WTOL - Toledo, OH (2/8) Construction is expected to begin soon for a new attraction to bring Toledo's maritime history alive along the riverfront. Senate considering flags among beach safety ideas Ludington Daily News (2/7) The Michigan Senate is currently considering a bill governing Great Lakes beach safety at public beaches — a bill with clauses both similar to and different than Ludington’s policies. Pure Michigan leader to join Google, Disney and Marriott in effort to lure foreign tourists MLive.com (2/6) Travel Michigan will join heavy hitters like Marriott International, the Walt Disney Company, and Best Western International in partnering with an organization called Brand USA to promote North American destinations overseas.
Overview Outdoor recreation in the Great Lakes region is a way of life. The Great Lakes offer outstanding tourism and recreation opportunities, ranging from pristine wilderness activities in national parks such as Isle Royale and Pukaskwa to waterfront beaches in major cities. A well-defined four-seasons climate supports many types of recreation from ice fishing, skiing and snowmobiling in the winter to golf, fishing, boating and swimming in the summer. The eight Great Lakes states have about 3.7 million registered recreational boats, or about a third of the nation's total. Michigan and Minnesota lead the nation in the number of boat registrations, and six Great Lakes states rank in the nation's top ten in total number. The commercial and sport fishing industry is collectively valued at more than $4 billion annually. Diving on shipwrecks is a growing Great Lakes sport, thanks to many underwater preserves and parks throughout the lakes. Off Lake Superior's Whitefish Point, better known to sailors as the "graveyard of the Great Lakes," it is said that more than 300 ships have been lost to Superior storms. For people who don't dive, the shipwrecks can be studied at many of the maritime museums throughout the region.
